In the Company of Heroes

by Bryan Strawser · Jun 4, 2003

For my flight back today from Los Angeles to Providence, Rhode Island, I snapped up two books at the WH Smith outlet at LAX. I just finished reading Michael Durant’s book In the Company of Heroes.

As a previous reader of Mark Bowden’s Black Hawk Down, I recognized Durant’s name immediately. He was the pilot of an Army Blackhawk Helicopter shot down over Somalia. He was taken captive and held for several days before being released with serious injuries, including a gunshot wound.

The part about Durant’s story that has always remained with me since reading Black Hawk Down is that he was protected on the ground by two Delta operatives – Randy Shughart and Gary Gordon, who placed themselves into a highly dangerous situation in order to protect Durant and his crew until rescue could arrive.

In the ensuing firefight, both Shughart and Gordon were killed. They were both awared the Congressional Medal of Honor for their sacrifce.

The part of the story that I did not know was what Durant went through during his captivity and the healing process that he went through after being released. The man has incredible character and inner strength.

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? and I said, Here I am. Send me….” Michael Durant went. And no one left him behind.

Alabama

by Bryan Strawser · Jun 1, 2003

Listening to Alabama on the iPod as I fly from Washington Dulles to Los Angeles. I haven’t really listened to Alabama in quite some time.

It’s amazing how much the songs remind me of growing up at home in Indiana… the small town.. basketball in the driveway.. being irritated at my brother… running 3-4 miles a day.. Friday night basketball games.. weekends at my grandparents…

Sometimes growing up is hell…

The Bright Apple

by Bryan Strawser · May 28, 2003

I’m sitting in Terminal B at Boston’s Logan Airport waiting on my boss to arrive – directly across from the Starbucks here. I’ve got the PowerBook out of my lap blogging away and fiddling with email and the like.

It’s interesting to watch people walk by, see the bright Apple logo on the laptop case, and stare… It’s a pretty cool feeling.

I’ve switched and I’m not going back!

Friedman on Peace

by Bryan Strawser · May 28, 2003

Wow.

Passion for Peace. I used to believe that when it came to Middle East peacemaking, America couldn’t want peace more than the parties themselves. I no longer believe that. By Thomas L. Friedman. [New York Times: Opinion]

Harry S Truman. “Carry the battle to them. Don’t let them bring it to you. Put them on the defensive. And don’t ever apologize for anything.” [Motivational Quotes of the Day]
