Creativity hits the Thieves

by Bryan Strawser · Dec 11, 2002

First I spam, then I burgle – BoingBoing reports that thieves are buying up spam lists looking for autoresponders that say “I’m out of town.”  I’ve often wondered if it is a good idea for bloggers to blithely announce an upcoming vacation.  Perhaps the burglars aren’t hip to blogging yet, but it’s only a matter of time.  [Ernie the Attorney]

Need one of these..

by Bryan Strawser · Dec 9, 2002

Solar Warrior.  A great story about one man’s fight to connect his high output solar system to PG&E’s grid (to allow him to contribute during the day and draw during the night).  Very interesting legal battle.  Of course, PG&E is acting like the proverbial dinosaur.  Low cost solar contributions, during peak usage hours, should be actively encouraged (thanks Jiri). On War

by Bryan Strawser · Dec 9, 2002

NYT.  Friedman.  How to prepare for the war.  My take: we are on an inevitable path to a major strategic shift in how we allocate our military power globally.  We are going to shift from Europe to the Middle East.  Currently, we have ~150,000 troops in Europe.  The bulk of those forces will likely end up in Iraq on a permanent basis, after we successfully invade.  In a year, we will be in the Middle East to stay.

Are most American’s even remotely aware what an occupation force like this would entail?  The burdens of expected of us?  No.  Certainly not.  They haven’t been prepared to accept the costs, the casualties, the terrorist trauma, and the global public opinion backlash.  Friedman tries to address some of the burdens of this grand strategy in his article, but he falls short.
