A Good Day!

by Bryan Strawser · Aug 18, 2002

I actually feel like I got some things done today:

  • Finalized new content management system install on Mail Greeting

  • Added new content to Mail Greeting

  • Cleaned out my pending link exchanges

  • Finished modifying an assessment process for the ‘real job’

  • Negotiated content licenses for new content

  • Four loads of laundry

  • Trip to Target and the Mall

Not often that I get that much done in one day!

This should get Kerri all fired up…

Useit.Com: Let Users Control Font Size. Another example of harmful Web technology comes with the increasing use of style sheets, which let web designers specify the exact size of text down to the pixel. Unfortunately, many designers are using this ability, leading to reduced readability of an increasing number of websites. [Tomalak’s Realm]

Mail Greeting is now Syndicated!

by Bryan Strawser · Aug 18, 2002

Spent some time this weekend transitioning Mail Greeting, one of my humor sites, over to a new content management system, written by a few friends of mine.  I also coded a module to generate an RSS/XML feed of the latest ten items of content added to the site.

The script even pings weblogs.com to advise it of updates.  Pretty slick!

You can obtain the XML feed here.

A bit of History

by Bryan Strawser · Aug 16, 2002

I know the answer.  Do you?

geek check. Here’s a new geek check for you. Read through the following text and try to determine the historic event it describes (ok it only describes a very small piece of the event, but I’m confident that you’ll figure it out). You can either send me your response via email, or you can use the comment link below. Good luck, and remember, no googleing.

Peter Yee at NASA Ames Research Center posts a warning to the TCP-IP mailing list: “We are currently under attack from an Internet VIRUS. It has hit UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, Lawrence Livermore, Stanford, and NASA Ames.” He suggests turning off telnet, ftp, finger, rsh and SMTP services. He does not mention rexec. Yee is actually at Berkeley working with Keith Bostic, Mike Karels and Phil Lapsley.

Hi, heard of the First Amendment?

by Bryan Strawser · Aug 16, 2002

Are we into thought crimes now?  Come on.  No speech should be criminalized.

“Deciding when a slur is a crime”. “Deciding when a slur is a crime”: Today’s edition of The Philadelphia Inquirer contains an excellent essay by lawyer/columnist Mitchell Sommers addressing the very difficult question of when racist speech can and should be criminalized. [How Appealing]
