Indiana Governor in Critical Condition

by Bryan Strawser · Sep 8, 2003

CHICAGO ó Indiana Gov. Frank OíBannon is under sedation and the next 24-48 hours “will be critical,” Dr. Wesley Yapor said late this afternoon after the governor underwent several hours of surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital for a cerebral hemorrhage.

Yapor, the attending neurosurgeon, told reporters that doctors removed blood from both sides of the governor’s brain. “The surgery went very well,” he said.

Yapor said the most likely cause of the governor’s condition was a stroke, and that there was also evidence of trauma to the governor’s brain, suggesting he had suffered additional injuries in a fall.

Yapor said O’Bannon is in critical condition, in a drug-induced coma. He said the governor is on a ventilator.

“We’re hoping he is going to recover function. How much, we don’t know,” he said. “He cannot be governor, or at least function as governor, for right now.” [Indianapolis Star]

Paul Evans Leaves Boston PD

by Bryan Strawser · Sep 8, 2003

BOSTON — Boston’s longtime police commissioner, whose tenure was marked by plummeting crime rates, said Monday he will leave to take a high-profile job helping British police improve their crime-fighting techniques.

Paul F. Evans, 54, will become director of the Police Standards Unit, an office created in 2001 by the British government to assess how British police forces are performing, and to help them improve.

Serving as police commissioner since 1994, Evans has overseen a drop in crime in most categories. Last year, the city experienced a 31-year low in violent crime.

Evans thanked the police department, other law enforcement officials, clergy members, nonprofit and community groups who put together a “team effort” in fighting crime.

“That’s why I’m being asked to go to England. It’s because of the collective accomplishments of what has been accomplished. It certainly wasn’t me acting alone by any stretch of the imagination,” he said.

He will replace Kevin Bond, a former police officer and business executive who left Police Standards Unit in April. Evans said he will officially retire from the Boston department and leave in November. [Boston Globe]

Faulty Armor on Stryker?

by Bryan Strawser · Sep 6, 2003

JUST A MONTH before the next U.S. Army unit is due to deploy in Iraq to relieve the hard-pressed forces already there, the military is confessing to a potential showstopper. The deploying unit%u2019s new armored vehicles may have faulty armor which would leave them vulnerable to machine-gun fire and to the rocket-propelled grenades that are the Iraq insurgents%u2019 favorite weapon.
The vehicle is the prized new Stryker wheeled troop carrier, advertised as the first fruit of the Army%u2019s plan to transform itself into a lighter, go-anywhere-fast force.
Worse still: the Army has known it might have a problem since February, but has kept quiet about it.

Abbas Steps Down

by Bryan Strawser · Sep 6, 2003

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, increasingly unpopular and worn out by a power struggle with Yasser Arafat, submitted his resignation Saturday, dealing a serious blow to a U.S.-backed peace plan.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s office warned it would not agree to Arafat heading the Palestinian government, and a senior Israeli official demanded that Arafat be sent into exile.

Abbas held office for only four turbulent months, and there was some uncertainty about whether his resignation was final. One Palestinian lawmaker said the resignation might be a tactical move designed to pressure Arafat. [New York Times]

Weekend

by Bryan Strawser · Sep 6, 2003

Yard work and house stuff today, some fiddling around in dreamweaver I’m sure. Will probably hit the driving range down the road.

Tomorrow, slow morning, and then a 2:09 tee time at The New England Country Club. Looking forward to a good round tomorrow.

According to the United States Postal Service, my driver, fairway woods, and bag should be here later today. And for this, I am tremendously excited.

Pubic Hair Transplants

by Bryan Strawser · Sep 2, 2003

Transplanted pubic hair is the latest trend in South Korea, where it is regarded as a sign of fertility.

Surgeon Afschin Fatemi, from Unna in Germany, said: “In the West, women try to reduce their genital hair as much as possible, but in Korea the trend is for forestation.”

He said a mass of pubic hair was considered a sign of fertility, which was why many women were paying as much as £1,700 to have hair transplanted from their heads.

Fatemi added: “The structure of head and pubic hair on Asians is quite similar. The implanted hair isn’t long and rarely falls out.”

The operation is conducted under local anaesthetic and bandaging can be removed after just one day.
