YAY!
Here’s an update on Dave. He just gave me a call. He sounds great. Very upbeat. He was overwhelmed by the wonderful outpouring of support for his recovery. I expect that he will be back online this weekend. [John Robb’s Radio Weblog]

Holy Dollar Signs Batman.. $10k in one day.. Incredible…
The Future of K5, and the First Ever Kuro5hin Fundraising Drive. It’s almost a cliche at this point that whenever K5 faces adversity, whenever times look darkest, you pull out all the stops and restore my faith in humanity with a force that makes my head spin. And folks, you have done it again. In one day, you all managed to raise ten thousand dollars. I Am Not Making This Up. Individually, out of a simple desire to make sure K5 goes on, each of your few dollars here and few dollars there added up to ten grand. This is not a negligible amount. Over the same time I did a lot of thinking, and a lot of reading your comments and suggestions. I talked the situation over with my wife, and we decided that the right thing to do is take K5 non-profit. So, as of today I’m committed to making K5 a non-profit entity. What this means is that now we really need you. It’s your support, or nothing. From now until June 26th (next Wednesday) we’re having our first ever fundraising drive. The goal is to raise one year’s operating budget: $70,000. It seems enormous, unattainable. But think that yesterday your contributions added up to $10,000. There’s an awful lot of us. We can do this. Read on for a look at the future, and the present. [kuro5hin.org]

I agree. I really don’t like ads, but I’m more than happy to see ads, even popups, on sites that I enjoy. Kuro5hin is one of them. Slashdot is another. The ads do not bother me, and I consider the content more than worthy of putting up with a few ads here and there….
Why I like ads, especially ads on Kuro5hin. The intention may be pure, but I think the attitude toward advertisements is just plain wrong. I like ads and I hope there are more of them. They’re a clean, crisp message because someone is paying for them. Furthermore, the ads I’ve bought on Kuro5hin for my new book ( Translucent Databases , wink wink) have drawn a very nice response and sold some books. Kuro5hin is the right audience and some of the buyers seemed happy they saw the ad. That’s why I agree with Tony the Tiger and say, “They’re geeerrraaaaattteee.” Let me explain. [kuro5hin.org]

Good Article. I’d hope that they would find a way to work together…

Ok, but I still want to know who it is… There was a great article yesterday somewhere about a school where they spent alot of time digging into this and now believe it’s Patrick Buchanan. I would enjoy it if that was true…

Not good. I like kuro5hin. I bought some text ads there and generally had a good time. I’ve tried to be an active user, but frankly, I prefer slashdot. I don’t want to see it go by the wayside though. So.. time to ante up and give rusty some money… You should too.
We’re Broke: The Economics of a Web Community. I come to you, Kuro5hin community, in an hour of need. Great googly-moogly, could that be any more pompous? Nevertheless, it’s true. You see, I found out last week that K5 is out of money. Our last remaining funds just went off to the gub’mint for quarterly taxes. I won’t get a paycheck this month. Subscription income will help a little, but in the longer term, the prognosis is bleak. Frankly, I don’t know what to do. So I thought I’d take a little time and lay out the structure and workings of the media business in general, and K5 in particular, and ask what you think I should do. [kuro5hin.org]
